Founded on 16 July 1997, the society has been operating under the name Via Imperialis - castles, palaces and monasteries in the heart of Europe, since October 2003. The society exists to preserve and promote European cultural heritage. Via Imperialis currently manages fifteen of the most beautiful and historically significant castles, palaces and monasteries in Austria. The society is also expected to take on the role of steward of several other historical landmarks in neighbouring Switzerland and new EU member states, in the near future. Our aim is to enhance public awareness of Europe’s most historical sites through advertising and promotion. This includes hosting symposia and other events, providing tourist information for our heritage attractions and services, and the publication of print, audio and visual promotional material. By merging the expertise of castles, palaces and monasteries, we have been able to provide a more comprehensive perspective of historic sites in Austria, and respond to the needs of our visitors with greater efficiency. Our aim is to encourage culture enthusiasts from all over the world to come and explore European heritage. Naturally, this message is also communicated via the latest information technology: visitors who have been unable to see all of Austria’s historic jewels during their sojourn will be invited to return. In the same way past owners of Austrian castles, palaces and monasteries were involved in various social and cultural activities, visitors today are increasingly committed to learning more about Austrian history and culture, and the colourful events which took place within the country’s historic walls. This deluge of interest requires that owners and stewards of these magnificent monuments make them accessible to the public; this is the only way to offer a true insight into the cultural treasures of Europe. Hosting prestigious events is another means to heightening the awareness of our cultural heritage. Contemporary theatrical or musical productions performed at any of our unique historic sites are guaranteed to captivate any audience. It is our responsibility to preserve the great cultural treasures we have inherited - castles, palaces and monasteries of Europe - not only for our own benefit, but also for our children, and for the future. Like many public institutions faced with increasing financial challenges, it is essential for the society to find new innovative ways of improving our economic situation to ensure the preservation of Europe’s cultural heritage. These historic buildings must be protected and preserved in order to ensure knowledge and awareness of Austria’s diverse cultural offerings spread far beyond its borders.
