There is hardly a place that compares to Bad Ischl. This small town offers visitors infinite glamour, history and flair. Nostalgic impressions can be found in every nook and cranny, as it must have been in the days of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Kaiser Villa played a pivotal role in European history, in particular from 1854 – 1914 when it was used as the summer residence of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. The arrival of imperial family elevated Ischl to become one of the most fashionable spa resorts in Europe. The rulers even went on to name the region’s famous spas: Karlsbad, Marienbad, Meran and Bad Kissingen. Today, you can still visit the originally preserved quarters where Empress Elisabeth (Sissi) and her family spent the summer months, the desk where Emperor Franz Joseph I ruled, and where, in 1914, he signed the declaration of war on Serbia, thus triggering World War I. The extensive Imperial Park around the villa is ideal for historical walks and also presents an opportunity to explore the 16th-century Elizabethan-style cottage Franz Josef erected in the park as a wedding present to his 16 year-old bride, Elisabeth. Exhibition: In 2008, the imperial town of Bad Ischl will host the "People, Myths and Monarchs" exhibition. www.landesausstellung2008.at Address:
