City of Lienz Museum Perched high above the town of Lienz sits a medieval castle on an idyllic wooded hill. Bruck Castle was built in the mid-13th century as a residence for Count von Görz. After a colourful and turbulent history, the castle’s impressive rooms now accommodate the local heritage museum. The City of Lienz Museum houses the largest collection of works by the internationally renowned East Tyrolean painter Albin Egger-Lienz. Over 100 of Egger-Lienz’ works are currently on display, giving art lovers an opportunity to obtain a better insight into the life and work of the “peasant painter“ who, for so long, had been misunderstood. Equally impressive is the former castle itself: one of the most fascinating features of Bruck Castle is the two-storied gothic chapel, which origins date back to the Roman Empire. The chapel also houses original frescos painted by the Pustertal Valley artist Simon von Taisten in the late-15th century. The Knights Hall at Bruck Castle is another spectacular sight not to be missed. In addition to the Egger-Lienz exhibition and seasonal art shows at Bruck Castle, art lovers will enjoy a visit to the museum shop, which stocks a fine selection of unique gifts. The castle even has a sunny terrace, where you can sit and rest your weary feet. After a cultural tour, relax and savour Austrian culinary delights – and enjoy the breathtaking panoramic view of the Dolomite Mountains.
