Halbturn Palace - Food, wine, art and culture in a historic setting, a unique combination in the Burgenland region. Trace the footsteps of emperors and princes on a pleasant stroll through the palace gardens, indulge yourself in good food and drink and experience pure Austrian culture at Halbturn Palace. This former hunting lodge and summer residence of the imperial family is considered the most important example of secular Baroque architecture in the Burgenland region. Today, the palace is privately owned by Baron Paul Waldbott-Bassenheim, a direct descendant of the Austria’s famous archducal family. The baron and his wife, Marietheres, Countess of Wickenburg, have maintained an inspiring environment for all to enjoy. The palace is situated in northern Burgenland, not far from Lake Neusiedl. It was built in 1711 by Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt, one of the most iconic Austrian architects of the late baroque period during the reign of Emperor Karl VI. The crown jewel of the castle is the ceiling fresco “allegory of time and light". Painted by Franz Anton Maulpertsch, the fresco was commissioned by Empress Maria Theresa as a wedding gift for archduchess Marie Christine.
