St. Paul’s Abbey rises high above the Lavanttal Valley. Founded in 1091 on the site of the ancestral castle of the Dukes of Carinthia, Benedictine monks have lived and worked here ever since. The abbey is considered a cultural and spiritual centre of the province, even today. At the heart of the abbey precinct lies a magnificent Romanesque basilica. Affectionately known as the "treasure house of Carinthia", this medieval building represents one the most important Romanesque churches in Austria, and houses some of the finest works of art in Europe. The monastic library is equally famous for its handwritten manuscripts, which date back to the 4th century, and its large of collection paintings and treasures from every epoch. Learn more about the history of European art with a visit to St. Paul’s in the Lavanttal Valley.
