Stift Stams Monastery

Founded in 1273 by Count Meinhard II, the monastery was originally conceived as a burial site for the counts of Tyrol. Over the centuries, Cistercian monks have created a stunning architectural monument, which blossomed in the Baroque era. Breathtaking features such as the great basilica offer an insight into the monks’ dedication to art. Equally superb is the Bernardisaal Hall, now a popular venue for numerous events. Today, the abbey, home to approximately 20 monks, is not only the spiritual centre of the region, but also an education facility. It houses a grammar school for young skiers, a normal grammar school and a high school.

Further cultural offerings include hosting classic concerts, and art exhibitions at the monastic museum. Every year thousands of visitors come to experience life at the monastery, many are attracted by the church towers, which can be seen from afar. Some come to admire the Baroque architecture, others find the idyllic location in the midst of the Alps the perfect place to relax and unwind. Another interesting insight into life at the monastery can be obtained with a visit to the monastic shop where you can buy homemade fruit products, schnapps from the monastic distillery and bread from the monastic bakery.
